Recognition

Not night
not day
not sleep
nor open eyes
but certain sight.

I see my hands
beneath the basin’s fill,
cool, cool water
meets my face
floating there.

I see myself
in cloistered garb,
a countenance
caught within the past.

recognition,
a mirror’s tale
of memory
written anew.

another face
another age
another lifetime
soaking through.

  1. This was from a true experience - seeing myself from another lifetime in a monastery as a young nun.
