Cistern Cay Vacation - Her

She took her last walk to the cistern
to pull water for their morning coffee,
walking the island paths shaled by owners
who hoped for tourists
but got mostly conch fishermen
or pontoon visitors beached by storms.

And she knew this was her last time
camping with his family on a coral shelf
adrift in the Exuma sea park.
Their isolation purchased
from an ad in the Bahamian Times
trading Ohio for an almost-tropics retreat.

So she wrapped empty sea shells
salted with bright, white sand
to help her cling a little to
the time she was moored in love -
but packed nothing that could
be unpacked for life again on his island.
